We who with songs beguile your pilgrimage / And swear that Beauty lives though lilies die, / We Poets of the proud old lineage / Who sing to find your hearts, we know not why ... (James Elroy Flecker)

Enheduanna

She was an Akkadian poet, a princess (daughter of King Sargon) and High Priestess of the goddess Inanna and the moon god Nanna.

She was the first author known to recorded history.

Read translations of her devotional poetry here and here. Read about her life and times at Wikipedia, or at Ancient Origins.

Professor Joe Janes of the University of Washington says,

She not only was responsible for a series of works, which have survived a long time, she may also be responsible for the idea of being responsible.

Her hymn known as 'The Exaltation of Inanna', Professor Janes adds,

is 700 years older than the Egyptian Book of the Dead, more than 1,000 years older than the I Ching and 1,500 years older than the "Odyssey", the "Iliad" and the Hebrew Bible.

(You can hear this read on YouTube at the Ancient Origins link above.)

She lived some time in the 23rd Century BC. One source says she was born in 2285.

************

I myself have been a priestess of Inanna (if not 'High'). I mean in THIS lifetime! And I've been a poet since I was seven, as well as authoring a few books as an adult. So I dare lay claim to being one of Enheduanna's spiritual descendants.
